SHE-LOGY: Digital Pioneers

Celebrating trailblazing women in digital journalism.

I was writing a She-logy piece for my list of inspiring women in digital journalism, when I encountered an article about women in this field. I was in the process of featuring the article, when I realized that the writer unintentionally has written a She-logy for me. So I create this post to singularly feature her article and three (there were many others) of the amazing women she mentioned. A recommended reading.

Women were digital media pioneers, but there’s still a gender gap there.

This article by Meg Heckman in Columbia Journalist Review presented pioneering women in the world of digital journalism startup, including:

  1. Michelle Johnson at Boston.com,
  2. Retha Hill at WashingtonPost.com
  3. Emily Bell at TheGuardian.com

These ladies pioneered techniques familiar to any digital journalist, like rolling news updates, photo galleries, and timelines. But somehow, despite the number of women behind the startup of important news website, the efforts did not translate to gender parity in the digital media landscape. “The people labeled as rockstars on the frontiers of journalism are almost entirely men”.
